Single-Vineyard Pinot Noir from Marty’s Vineyard

Made in the Heart of the Russian River Valley

Marty’s Vineyard

Marty’s Vineyard is in the very cool area of Green Valley in the Russian River Valley. It sits high atop a hill overlooking the Russian River Valley and is often shrouded in fog until midday. Sandy Goldridge soils along with the vineyard’s coastal proximity create vines that are balanced, require minimal – if any – water during the growing season, grow and mature evenly, and ripen without seeing temperatures above 88 degrees. The resulting grapes are filled with spicy red fruit notes, elegant tannins, and concentrated flavors.

Harvest Notes

A warm, dry spring woke our vines up very early in the year, with budbreak and bloom in late February to early March. Because of its cooler climate and coastal proximity, our Marty’s Vineyard fruit ripened slowly over the summer months, with tannins and fruit flavors not showing full maturity until early September. Marty’s was one of our last vineyards to be harvested, with our first grapes coming into the winery on September 2. From the onset of fermentation, the wines displayed lovely red and black fruit aromas with floral undertones and notes of herbes de Provence. Tannins were very elegant and colors ranged from a beautiful transparent purple to Bing-cherry red, resulting in wines that are lusciously perfumed and silky on the palate. The 2016 vintage is extremely pleasing upon release, but because of its balance and pedigree, will reward anyone who should choose to lay some down for 5–10 years or more!

Sensory Evaluation

With beautiful raspberry and Santa Rosa plum aromas complemented by an incredibly fresh perfume, the 2016 Marty’s Vineyard displays all that we love about this area of Green Valley. On the palate, the wine is incredibly silky with very fine tannins and a lovely undercurrent of herbes de Provence. Elegant and supple, the wine seems to glide across the palate, with beautifully integrated fruit, acidity and tannins. Although bright and  silky in youth, the 2016 Marty’s Vineyard promises to evolve gracefully over the next three to five years.
